Complete Guide to Shipping Calculators for International Trade

Understanding shipping costs and logistics is crucial for successful international trade. Our shipping calculators help you accurately calculate freight costs, container loading, and shipping expenses for your apparel imports.

What is CBM and Why Does It Matter?

CBM (Cubic Meter) is the standard unit of volume used in international shipping. It's calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of your cargo.

CBM = (Length × Width × Height) / 1,000,000

For example, a carton measuring 500mm × 400mm × 300mm:

(500 × 400 × 300) / 1,000,000 = 0.06 CBM

Container Loading Capacity

Standard container sizes:

  • 20ft container: Approximately 33 CBM
  • 40ft container: Approximately 67 CBM
  • 40ft HQ container: Approximately 76 CBM

Calculate how many cartons fit in a container:

Number of Cartons = Container CBM ÷ Carton CBM

Freight Cost Calculations

Calculate freight cost per piece or per carton to understand your true landed cost:

Freight Per Piece = Total Freight ÷ Total Pieces
Freight Per Carton = Total Freight ÷ Number of Cartons

Air Freight vs Sea Freight

Air freight is calculated based on chargeable weight, which is the greater of:

  • Actual weight (kg)
  • Volumetric weight (CBM × 167)

Sea freight is typically charged per CBM or per container (FCL).
